Where does this tour go...?
Yandina Hotel - established 1887
Situated in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Yandina Hotel was
established by Australian pioneers. Yandina was a staging depot on the route
between Brisbane and the Gold fields in Gympie. Besides the gold rush there
were a number of additional thirsty tasks such as building roads and railways,
clearing land and harvesting sugar cane. John Sommer built the Australian Hotel
in Yandina around 1887. He was granted a licence in 1889. However, he
discovered he had built it in the wrong position (Gympie Road). As a result, in
1891 the Australian Hotel was hitched up to a team of bullocks and moved on
skids to Yandina Hotel’s present site in Stevens Street.
The original building that housed the pub was
constructed just a little way down the road by John Sommer in 1887. However, he
soon realised it was actually situated in the wrong spot – right along busy
Gympie Road. So in 1891, the bold decision was made to physically move the
entire building to its current location on Stevens Street. An incredible
engineering feat at the time, the pub was lifted onto skids and hauled
approximately 400 metres by a team of bullocks to its present site. Amazingly,
not a drop was spilled from the barrels during this epic relocation
The Imperial Hotel - established 1911
A cornerstone of the hinterland village of
Eumundi, the iconic Imperial Hotel has been welcoming locals and tourists since
its opening in 1911. Home to the Eumundi Brewery and Eumundi Distillers, this
majestic Queenslander hotel is a Sunshine Coast 'must visit.
The establishment was founded in 1911 by Ransome Jefferies – son of Edgar
Jeffries and head of a syndicate who had it rebuilt by a Mr. Bytheway. The
Jefferies family were involved with both the Eumundi Hotels, both of which had
female licensees.
The hotel burned to the ground in 1926 but was rebuilt the same year using
local timber, and it is also had its fair share of ghost stories!
With its colourful creative décor and murals,
sweeping verandahs, sensational beer garden and relaxed vibe, you'll be drawn
to the groove that is The Imperial Hotel.
When it comes to beer, try their very own Eumundi
Brewery, Pale Ale or Ginger Beer or a range of other seasonal beers.
The hotel is also a great place to soak up live music with acoustic sets in The Beer Garden all
weekend.
Joes Waterhole - established 1891
Originally opened by E.H. Arundell as the Railway
Hotel in 1891. During the 1900s the Railway Hotel underwent a makeover
and adopted the new name Commercial Hotel. The local pub survived many tough
times, including drought and a fire that destroyed the then two-storey pub,
which was replaced with a new building a year later in 1925.
Former Queensland boxing champion and local
larrikin, Joe Whiting traded his cane field for the hotel, previously known as
the Commercial in the 1960s. It officially became known as Joe’s
Waterhole in 1987.
